Launched in 2001, the .NAME gTLD is the sole TLD intended for personal websites only. These domains can include personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are known by. Initially, just 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to secure john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed third-level domains remained functional.
